The Buddha recognized that people live in the world; we cannot spend all of our waking hours in seclusion. The noble, or ennobling, eight-fold path that he expounded to guide us toward liberation includes right action, right livelihood, and right speech. So it is clear that he intended his teachings for people like us—worldlings, householders—as well as for monastics and lay renunciates.

Last Tuesday, Steve led a thoughtful discussion of the challenges we face in finding a balance between pursuing a contemplative life and engaging with the many social, political, and environmental ills that confront us. This week, we'll step back a bit, and use the noble 8-fold path as a framework for reflecting on how we can put the Buddhadharma into practice in the many situations where we find ourselves interacting with other beings every day—at home, at work, and elsewhere in the world.
